Founded in 1997, the Peninsula Youth Orchestra is based in Redwood City, CA, and is the only youth orchestra program serving San Mateo County. Over 400 young musicians are currently enrolled in PYO’s rigorous sequential orchestra education program that has been twice recognized by the California Arts Council.  PYO attributes its success to overwhelming support from its families and local music teachers, coupled with an artistic program conceived by its founding conductors, Mitchell Sardou Klein and Sara Salsbury, and implemented by its outstanding staff of professional musicians and educators.  Tonight we hear the Peninsula Young Artists, the advanced level preparatory orchestra, under the direction of Sara Salsbury.  The Peninsula Young Artists have performed in Carnegie Hall (2004), The Mozart 2006 Festival in Austria (2006), the Pre-Olympic Festival in China (2008), and the inaugural Los Angeles Orchestra Festival in Walt Disney Concert Hall (2010).

The Peninsula Youth Orchestra reflects and enhances the cultural diversity of its community by bringing together student musicians to rehearse and perform symphonic music in an educational setting.  PYO strives for high musical standards within a supportive environment that encourages enthusiasm, knowledge, and love of music.  PYO enriches the lives of its musicians as they progress through a challenging course of repertoire that prepares them with skills needed to enjoy and pursue music the rest of their lives, either as professional or amateur players.

All PYO musicians study and perform traditional orchestral repertoire with an emphasis on contemporary literature and works by American composers.  PYO received the prestigious 2000 ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming of American Music on a Foreign Tour for its first international tour in Japan in June of 1999.  Commissioned works by local composers are routinely presented as part of its regular programming.  Please visit the PYO website at http://www.peninsulayouthorchestra.org for information about our concerts, auditions and the Peninsula Music Camp held each summer

Sara Salsbury, Peninsula Youth Orchestra co-founder, serves as General Manager for PYO and is also Director of the Preparatory Orchestras, the Peninsula Music Camp, and the Chamber Music program.   She has previously been part of the Instrumental Music Team for the Redwood City School District and a string specialist for the Mountain View CSMA, the Sunnyvale and Mountain View School Districts, Woodside Priory School, and the El Camino Youth Symphony.   She is a member of Mu Phi Epsilon, Association of California Symphony Orchestras (ACSO), The League of American Orchestras, MENC, CMEA and ASTA/CODA. She also serves on the ACSO Board of Directors.  Sara was one of the 1994 recipients of the CAPA Arts Award (Council for the Arts of Palo Alto) for her dedication to music education and youth symphony work.  Sara grew up in Michigan where she attended the National Music Camp at Interlochen for many summers.  Sara received her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music Degrees from DePauw University and her Master of Arts Degree in Music Education from Stanford University. Sara and her husband Phillip live in Palo Alto where they have raised four sons, all of whom were music majors in college.
